Ingredients

Dough and topping

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

Filling

  • 6 medium Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare apple slices and set aside.
  • Mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt; cut in butter until crumbly. Chill topping.
  • Cook butter, brown sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in skillet. Add apples and coat.
  • Pour filling into skillet, top with crumble mixture, and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden.
  • Let cool slightly, then serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for best results.
