Ingredients

Baking ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (to be browned)

Sugar and eggs

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Apple filling

  • 2 cups fresh apples (peeled, cored, and diced)

Frosting ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/4 cup brown butter (prepared separately)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions 

  • Brown the butter and set aside to cool.
  • Mix dry ingredients and combine with browned butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and diced apples.
  • Pour batter into a prepared baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes.
  • Allow cake to cool, then prepare the brown buttercream frosting by mixing softened butter, brown butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla.
  • Spread frosting over cooled cake and serve.

Notes

For best results, use fresh apples and ensure butter is browned properly for a rich flavor.
