Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 2 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup chilled butter, diced
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Buttered Pecans

  • 1 cup Buttered Pecans (finely chopped)
  • 2 cups pecan halves
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (for garnish)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare pans and line with parchment.
  • Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, egg yolks, vanilla, and mix.
  • Mix dry ingredients; alternate adding to batter with milk mixture. Divide into pans and bake 30 minutes.
  • Make caramel frosting: boil sugar, butter, cream, syrup, salt; add powdered sugar, vinegar, vanilla. Cool until thickened.
  • Assemble cake: layer with frosting and chopped pecans. Frost sides and top. Garnish with pecans and salt.

Notes

For best flavor, toast pecans before chopping and adding to the cake.
